This artist’s studio is located in the Gulf Islands of BC. The client is a Vancouver-based film maker who produces internationally acclaimed animated short films.
The building houses a large work studio, media room, and offices. To accommodate the owner’s need for even light, the expansive studio windows face the forested slope to the north. The other rooms enjoy south-facing water views, and all have direct access to an extensive exterior deck.
The high ceilings, exposed heavy timber structure, concrete floors, aluminum windows, and steel siding give an industrial feel, which is juxtaposed with cedar ceilings and clear cedar siding applied horizontally. The round porthole windows are evocative of both coastal industry and a Jetson-era “rocket ship” and reference the client’s corporate logo.
